Clarification: a question of what, not who

Bookmark and Share

Clarification:
In a story yesterday about a Sudanese man injured over the weekend, paraphrased comments from John Branson, a local attorney who has represented the Sudanese Community Council of Portland, were misleading.
The story indicated Branson felt the victim did not know "who hit him." It would have been more accurate to say that Branson feels the victim doesn't know "what hit him."
It's a relevant distinction because family and friends of the victim initially felt he had been attacked and that his case was not receiving adequate police and media attention, with the implication being that race might be playing a role. Now both police and some of those same people say nobody is certain what happened. Upon regaining consciousness, the victim isn't claiming to have been assaulted and many involved agree the case is getting adequate attention.

The incident remains under investigation.
We regret any confusion.
