Celebrating 21 years in business, the Pepperclub offers a four-course menu for $21. There's a relaxed atmosphere at this Old Port eatery. "The original owner, he listened to a lot of Art Pepper," said Mary Ledue Paine, owner of the Pepperclub restaurant with Eddie Fitzpatrick. "That came from Art Pepper. When they were creating this space, he knew a lot about jazz, and he liked jazz and he liked to listen to jazz, and he played jazz in the restaurant when we opened." Pepper was an American alto saxophonist. She became an owner in 1998 but continues doing some of the diverse jobs from her start there. "I still do all those same jobs, I still wait tables, I still work in the kitchen, I still wear a lot of hats," Paine said. The free-flowing jazz feel persists. "We're a casual, friendly place, we really are," she said. The Pepperclub uses organic ingredients when possible. The restaurant buys organic beef, potatoes and maple syrup from Caldwell Farm in Turner. Native Maine supplies produce. All dinners are served with homemade molasses oatmeal bread and salad. The Pepperclub also serves 30 wines by the glass or bottle, assorted local and imported beer and natural sodas and juices.
